Trust…

Trust in God, and trust in Nature,
these are the aspects of trust that I am reminded of each Spring.

During this time of year, when tiny buds and sprouts pop up from the warming ground,
I often think about the billions of interconnected relationships that go on beneath our feet.
It is here in the Earth’s soil, that an amazing symbiotic relationship is formed between tiny microbes and roots of the plants.
In this simple system of trust, the plant feeds the microbes by sending energy to their root zones. In return, the microbes both protect and feed the plant. Thus, plants rooted in fertile soil can continue growing and unfolding, because the healthy microbes can be trusted to deliver the exact nutrients that the plants call for.

Thinking about this, reminds me of the Biblical passage that explains how the Lilies of the Field grow,“they do not toil, nor do they spin.” As I see the flowers, leaves, and grasses of Spring begin this year’s journey of growth, I once again ponder the idea that some parallel concept may be true for humans.

Is there not some human version of the plant’s trusting relationship with the soil’s microbial system?  Are we not somehow mystically connected, protected and provided for?  Are the random coincidences that happen to us in our moments of need really coincidences?

Humans have long asked these questions, and each of us must answer them for ourselves. For me, however, the budding of Spring is often a clue to my answer.
