Spring Showers…

Every Season offers us multiple examples of the Genius of Creation,
and Spring is no exception.

There was a time however, when my love of sunshine coupled with a lack of understanding, left me silently complaining about the abundance of Spring Showers. Then, as I began to learn about the role of the Enzyme Inhibitor, my attitude towards these rainy days began to change.

In the seed world there is something called an Enzyme Inhibitor. This is a very important molecule that binds to the plant’s enzymes, and thereby blocks their germination. It is released when the seeds are soaked in water, and only then can the process of germination begin.

Just imagine what would happen if the seeds started to sprout  in the Fall, when most of them are released from their Mother plant. Without the role of the Enzyme Inhibitor, these young sprouts would meet the cold winter temperatures, and many would suffer a premature demise.

So the next time that we have a rainy Spring day, or a series of them, please join me in appreciating another aspect of the Genius of Creation. For without the interconnected relationship between the rain and the Enzyme Inhibitors, much of the life that we know,  might cease to exist.
